I always struggle with this part, I guess its because I never feel as though the work is final.
I will talk about my thoughts on the work so far and use that as the basis of the evaluation.
So what do I want to say with this work, I guess what I am trying to point out to everyone is that we a vunerable, we know we do not live forever thats a given, but what I have noticed is we strive to live longer yet don't really know why?
Are we that selfish now that we just don't want to let go? with the advances in medicines and surgery we have so many more options for longevity now. as I have stated in my research this can be a burden on society, family even the health sector.
I see this (linking it with the brief) as a true shift in destination, we are beggining a new journey into unchartered territory.
I have also chosen to present the photographs in many different forms thus shifting their destination. I hope the viewers are open enough to realise the approach I have taken is that of a begginer and that the photographs themselves are not the main part of this brief but catalysts to other and more advanced things.
This has been a huge learning curve for me, Realising the amount of forums there are in the world now to present work in photographic form, but clearly not that easy to attract an audience.
I hope to carry on with this throughout the course to start using this type of forum as potfolio, as well as some conventional ways.

Preperation
Well so far tonight I have managed to mount the images onto alluminium , I first mounted black card onto the alluminium as a barrier it also flattens out the imperfections in the sheet metal, I then adhere the photo to the card.
I am now waiting for the iron to heat up for the t-shirt transfers.
Oh and this is my 100 post (Lee).

A ban on killing
Forget carelessness, frivolity, wanten destruction as things to avoid. forget too all the fine points about good and bad reasons - it's black and white. human life is sacred, and we should never bring it to an end - full stop.
Ask people what they understand by the sanctity of life, whether or not they believe in it, and if theres an answer at all, it will most likely be along these lines.
It has supporters and opponents both in large numbers. But those who find this view hard to swallow do not, of course want carte blanche to do away with whomever, whenever, they choose, most people think that killing human beings is wrong in almost all cases.
Is it bad to die?
He who pretends to look on death without fear lies, Al men are afraid of dying, this is the great law of sentinent beings, without which the entire human species would soon be destroyed.

Reading
After doing a little more reading at work today, of 10 good quetions about life and death by Christopher Belshaw, it was interesting to read that there was reference to John Donne the poet and Durer who both have connections with the use of death as a subject in there work.
I have chosen to show a few on the blog as they have relevance to the work I am trying to produce.

I have a couple of other ideas
I don't won't to let on yet but these will be used in another way other than the ones being used already.
Pages
They are of course just the pages that have been designed in dreamweaver and published on to the web site, but as I said before the photos do not seem to appear on the web page nor does the home button?
Web Pages, Page 2
Poem

I have chosen part of the poem "Tithonus" by Tennyson to give clue to the work/photographs that will be displayed on the wall.
What I am trying to present is the many ways in which you can display/present images/photographs and have the context or narrative the same yet shown and explained in numerous forms, I will not know how successful the outcome will be until the crit!
Postcards
Well the postcards arrived this morning, and they look great, better than I imagined infact.
I am so pleased with the service moo.com offer, I must thank mr gavin for his introduction of moo.com, so Thank you mr Lee Gavin from Tony May....

For the Crit
I need to get organised for Thursdays crit, I will need to organise a computer with web access in the base room, a table to lay out the postcards and any other information, also a wall space preferably behind the desk and mac.
I might consider a poster with the relevant blog, web and flickr addresses on it.

Aluminium Sheet

I have used this company before, they are really good at supplying the material I request at short notice.
I will be getting 3 sheets of 2mm aluminium 420mm x 297mm to mount the photographs on.
The price is very reasonable too, at £12 total.
I prefer the aluminium to any other material such as foamboard, MDF, etc..
Other Web Page Examples
Homepage

This is the homepage so far, I guess that this will be the way it looks on the day of the crit as I seem to be still having problems uploading images?
As it said in the book on having a web page, the best rules are to keep it simple, us dark background colours to enhance the photographs (if you can get the buggers to load).

Considerations
I began this brief feeling as though the right decision was to go down the web way, I was naive to think that this would generate a wide audience of people because of its accessibilty.
I did not consider the fact that I would have to advertise this in some way! and try and promote it. With very little success so far I might add, I realise now that even my own database of contacts/friends etc would not even be that great at contributing to its success but be part of its and my failing.
I still have a lot of buisiness cards that have to be distributed, not only here but in Australia as well.
So I continue on, in the hope that as I persue this I will start to iron out the pitfalls and begin to reap some of its benifits.
I understand that this is my first encounter with this type of technology and I still have a lot to learn, not only the technical aspects of web design but also the required content and actual audience I am trying to attract.

More Thoughts
Well when considering the different ways in which I will be exhibitng/showing the chosen Photos, I have decided on using different text/explanation for each of the ways they are displayed, for example:-
On the postcards I have chosen to put explanation on the reverse side of the image so as the reader has to examine the card once they see the photo, which should be enough to provoke response.
The wall hung photos will have some text to the side of each image so the viewer can choose to read about the photos before they absorb themselves in the photograph, or vise versa.
The web page will have an explanation on the index/home page given a brief indication or explanation (not neccessarily true of course) about what they have instore on the chosen pages they decide to visit, of course as well as this they will have a chance to e-mail any response they like to my email address which as yet is not linked only listed on each page, as well as the blog address and the flickr address.
The flickr page will be left un explained as yet, but the photographs will be placed in there own folder with the title life expectancy.
I have also decided to leave the words under construction on the web pages until I am happy that this piece of work is concluded.

Dreamweaver Again
Well I finally got to speak to Gareth about the help I needed on the dreamweaver, adding photo's and an extra button.
As usual it did not run smoothly, I could not access the wireless internet connection at ucca so I was unable to launch the updated pages.
So I saved them in dreamweaver until I got home, and relaunched them, they do not appear in the browser firefox, and when I launch them in safari all I get is a question mark in a blue box where the photos and the button should be.

Will we have to choose who lives? by A.C. Grayling
From an ethical point of view, two scenarios offer themselves in connection with the future of death. One relates to a situation in which the average human lifespan grows ever longer, but without major solutiomns to ageing and its many attendant diseases and disabitilies. the other relates to the simultaneous conquering both death and the current downsides of ageing, so that people live healthy well-functioning lives for 150 to 200 years or even beyond.
In the first case there will have to be debate about the moral legitimacy and manner of elective death-both suicide and euthanasia-and medical provision for them. In the latter case there will have to be question about restricting conception, pregnancy and birth, to avoid a global population catastrophe.
Either way humanity will face much together moral dilemmas than already vex us about almost everything related to birth and death.

Vital Signs by James Hughes
One set of philosophers argues that the destruction of the frontal lobes, with the memories and personality they encode, is enough to declare someone dead.
Others resist the idea of the brain death altogether and insist that the heart must stop before a body can be treated as dead.
Linda Emmanuel of northwestern university medical school in Chicago, has proposed that individuals should choose their own definition of death - at some point between permanent vegative state and the heart stopping.
Progress in nanotechnology and the miniaturisation of computing will also eventually allow brain damage to be repairedwith implanted machines. Implanted wiring and computer chips already speak directly to and from brains, allowing deaf to hear, the blind to see and paralysed people to control computers directly with their thoughts.
On the other hand, there are enormous social and emotional costs involved in indefinitely maintaining the persistently unconcious in the hope of future cures. The medical and nursing costs for a permanently unconscious person in the industrialised world are many times greater than the average family income.

The Bitter End, by Guy Brown.
Until about 200 years ago, the average human lifespan was about 30 years. People died young and they died relatively rapidly, mainly from infections. During the 20th century the average lifespan in developed countries doubled and people in developed countries now tend to die old and slowly from degenerative diseases brought on by ageing.
Average lifespan has been increasing by 2.2 years per decade for the last 100 years.
In the U.K for example, if curent trends persist, the number of people more than 65 years old is predicted to triple from 4.6 million to 15.5 million in 2074, while the population aged over 100 will increase 100 fold from 10000 to 1 million.
Older people also decline physically. They are more prone to chronic diseases such as arthritis and rheumatism, osteoporosis, high blood pressure and heart failure, diabetes, varicose veins, ulcers and strokes. They are much more likely to have disabilities such as deafness, blindness and immobility.

Thought's
I have just had a thought, as we are (in the U.K). starting to live longer we will become a burden on society, as with age comes a debilitating process, how do we then accommodate in society, a strain is put onto the economy the health service and also the family.
In the new scientist magazine their was debate on would we have to intervene with natural selection and begin choosing who lives and who dies?
Will there be a point when we start to put down humans as we do with animals, can we self euthanize?
Those of us who try to fight death, are we just causing problems for the future, will people be working into later life, not allowing for younger generations to have jobs?
Are we supposed to die at a respectful age for the sake of humanity?
What are the benefits to those who live longer?
Will we just look at them as burdens? or relics that should be cherished for there knowledge?

Arm Chair or Theoretical Anthropologist
I have decided to call myself an arm chair/theoretical anthropologist, why? well all of my work I feel is of the humankind.
Reading Non Places has highlighted this to me.
There are also traces of the ethnologist in me too!
Have I just put myself in a box?

Summer Exhibition
During the summer holiday I managed to spot an exhibition in the community pharmacy gallery in Margate, they were asking for people to submit work for this with the theme being seaart.
I approached the lady in the gallery and asked for information on how to submit some photographic work, she gave the e-mail address (thanet_coast@thanet.gov.uk).
I had only a week to submit work before the deadline of 21st july 2007.
I had to fill out and sign a form titled the terms of agreement for artists, I had to give my name, address, phone number, emailand a short biographical.
upto 6 photographic images of any size were permitted to be submitted.
I did 4 and they were all accepted. They were put on display in the old lifeboat look out in broadstairs. non sold!
The exhibition was on from the 4th august to the 27th august.
I did not have any control on how the images would be displayed or where, the conditions in the gallery were rather damp and crinkled the photographs, I was very dissapointed.
I have learnt from this experience and will try and have more input the next time I exhibit.
They take a commission of 30% on any sales.

What are the reasons behind the blacked out faces?
Well, I decided to black out the faces for a number of reasons:- to keep the identity of these people anonymous, blacking out is a metaphor for death, they are wiped from our memory, in rescue situations, especially for suicide the first thing they are told to do is cover the face as to not become traumatised themselves.
Cards
I have recently sent out a bunch of buisiness cards inviting people to view the web page under false pretences to Australia, my parents are able to distribute them around Sydney and it's suburbs.
I hope they arrive in time for the crit, I am hoping to get some e-mail responses as the web page will still be under construction.
another shift in destination! trying to broaden my audience.
I still have to distibute them around in the U.K.
Hopefully they will search the other links like the blog and flickr?

Producing Outcomes
I have decided to go about this in a slightly different way, I will now be producing some Postcards with a selection of images aswell as prints to be displayed either at ucca or if I have time or aswell as in a gallery, if I can negotiate some space? there will be the production of a book started and the web page, they will also be on flickr.
I am really examining the outcomes each will have on the reading of these images, of course some text will be used in some of the outcomes but not all.

10 Good Questions about Life and Death
Just before she died she asked, 'what is the answer?' no question came. she laughed and said, 'in that case, what is the question?' then she died.

I am now begining to panic a little about what the content will be for the web page and possible book! My ideas are not really convincing at the moment, I believe I have confused myself into a sort of photographers block?
What have I learnt so far? well the blog (this blog) has been a means of escape as well as a means of collating and recording evidence ontop of the research journal that forms part of the overall evidence of research for final marking/observing.
I have been so mind boggled with the amount of different information on technical issues such as web based design, photoshop, domain names etc etc..that I have lost sight of the final outcome.
I am now aproaching things in a different way, sort of reverting back to my old way of getting research and evidence into some form of outcome.

Bettina Von Zwehl
Aaron and I are off to the photographers gallery today to get hold of Bettina's new book, Signed hopefully.
I was very interested in her work from the lecture we had with her at UCCA, I like her approach to her work and the way she spoke of not theorising the work to much.
I would like to think that in some work you produce it is upto the audience to theorise and debate the work you have created.
very inspiring..

Momentum
I have really lost momentum over the past week or so, what with all the techno problems I have been having and the lack of images I have managed to shoot,, aaaarrrgggghhh!
I now need the pressure of the final review to kick me into gear again..
I spent all day yesterday driving Lee to all the UCCA campus's for his installation, we had a good day, got lost abit but it has put me another day behind.

Creative Suite
Finally after asking numerous people about how to solve this problem, Mark Beer from UCCA sorted it.
I thank you Mark for your patients.
I can now hopefully get going with this web page......
