More from Christopher belshaw

A ban on killing

Forget carelessness, frivolity, wanten destruction as things to avoid. forget too all the fine points about good and bad reasons - it's black and white. human life is sacred, and we should never bring it to an end - full stop.

Ask people what they understand by the sanctity of life, whether or not they believe in it, and if theres an answer at all, it will most likely be along these lines.
It has supporters and opponents both in large numbers. But those who find this view hard to swallow do not, of course want carte blanche to do away with whomever, whenever, they choose, most people think that killing human beings is wrong in almost all cases.

Is it bad to die?

He who pretends to look on death without fear lies, Al men are afraid of dying, this is the great law of sentinent beings, without which the entire human species would soon be destroyed.
(jean jacques rousseau, la nouvelle heloise)
