Arm Chair or Theoretical Anthropologist

I have decided to call myself an arm chair/theoretical anthropologist, why? well all of my work I feel is of the humankind.
Reading Non Places has highlighted this to me.

There are also traces of the ethnologist in me too!

Have I just put myself in a box?

Competition

We seem to be in some sort of post war, Lee and I are trying to out do each other on the amount of post's I think I will win with quality not quantity!

Exhibited Photos

Summer Exhibition

During the summer holiday I managed to spot an exhibition in the community pharmacy gallery in Margate, they were asking for people to submit work for this with the theme being seaart.
I approached the lady in the gallery and asked for information on how to submit some photographic work, she gave the e-mail address (thanet_coast@thanet.gov.uk).

I had only a week to submit work before the deadline of 21st july 2007.

I had to fill out and sign a form titled the terms of agreement for artists, I had to give my name, address, phone number, emailand a short biographical.

upto 6 photographic images of any size were permitted to be submitted.

I did 4 and they were all accepted. They were put on display in the old lifeboat look out in broadstairs. non sold!

The exhibition was on from the 4th august to the 27th august.

I did not have any control on how the images would be displayed or where, the conditions in the gallery were rather damp and crinkled the photographs, I was very dissapointed.

I have learnt from this experience and will try and have more input the next time I exhibit.

They take a commission of 30% on any sales.

The final images/so far!

What are the reasons behind the blacked out faces?
Well, I decided to black out the faces for a number of reasons:- to keep the identity of these people anonymous, blacking out is a metaphor for death, they are wiped from our memory, in rescue situations, especially for suicide the first thing they are told to do is cover the face as to not become traumatised themselves.

Cards

I have recently sent out a bunch of buisiness cards inviting people to view the web page under false pretences to Australia, my parents are able to distribute them around Sydney and it's suburbs.
I hope they arrive in time for the crit, I am hoping to get some e-mail responses as the web page will still be under construction.

another shift in destination! trying to broaden my audience.

I still have to distibute them around in the U.K.

Hopefully they will search the other links like the blog and flickr?

Producing Outcomes

I have decided to go about this in a slightly different way, I will now be producing some Postcards with a selection of images aswell as prints to be displayed either at ucca or if I have time or aswell as in a gallery, if I can negotiate some space? there will be the production of a book started and the web page, they will also be on flickr.
I am really examining the outcomes each will have on the reading of these images, of course some text will be used in some of the outcomes but not all.

www usage

This is the estimated usage of the internet World wide, what an audience!

10 Good Questions about Life and Death

Just before she died she asked, 'what is the answer?' no question came. she laughed and said, 'in that case, what is the question?' then she died.
( the last words of gertrude stein )

Gertrude stein was an American writer who became a catalyst in the development of madern art and literature. (1874-1946) exert from wikipedia..

Getting ready

Right I have until Thursday to get my images ready and talk to Gareth about getting them onto the web page aswell as adding some extra content to the pages, such as text and links also a counter to see waht sort of traffic I get viewing it.

Good News

Well we found out that we no longer have the project to do from gary, relax now..

Gathering Evidence

I am now begining to panic a little about what the content will be for the web page and possible book! My ideas are not really convincing at the moment, I believe I have confused myself into a sort of photographers block?

What have I learnt so far? well the blog (this blog) has been a means of escape as well as a means of collating and recording evidence ontop of the research journal that forms part of the overall evidence of research for final marking/observing.

I have been so mind boggled with the amount of different information on technical issues such as web based design, photoshop, domain names etc etc..that I have lost sight of the final outcome.

I am now aproaching things in a different way, sort of reverting back to my old way of getting research and evidence into some form of outcome.

Bettina Von Zwehl

Aaron and I are off to the photographers gallery today to get hold of Bettina's new book, Signed hopefully.
I was very interested in her work from the lecture we had with her at UCCA, I like her approach to her work and the way she spoke of not theorising the work to much.
I would like to think that in some work you produce it is upto the audience to theorise and debate the work you have created.
very inspiring..

Momentum

I have really lost momentum over the past week or so, what with all the techno problems I have been having and the lack of images I have managed to shoot,, aaaarrrgggghhh!
I now need the pressure of the final review to kick me into gear again..

I spent all day yesterday driving Lee to all the UCCA campus's for his installation, we had a good day, got lost abit but it has put me another day behind.

Creative Suite

Finally after asking numerous people about how to solve this problem, Mark Beer from UCCA sorted it.
I thank you Mark for your patients.
I can now hopefully get going with this web page......
